Each resident is responsible for arranging their garbage pickup service with the contract hauler. Each single family household will be supplied with a 65- or 95-gallon refuse cart for collection on Tuesdays. Residents may exchange their cart for a smaller cart for which a change fee may apply. Additional 95-gallon refuse carts are available for rent for an annual fee.

Waste Pickup Schedule:

Garbage is picked up on Tuesdays - place garbage cans/toters at the curb (on the driveway or grassy area of the parkway) no earlier than 6 p.m. on the day preceding pickup. Empty containers must be removed no later than 9 a.m. the day following pickup. NEVER place garbage cans/toters in the street. Groot tries to be regular with its collection times but may arrive earlier or later on collection day. Please have your materials out by 6 a.m. to be assured pickup.

Refuse Collection:

Residents are permitted to set out unlimited household waste for collection. Additional refuse beyond the cart must be contained in refuse cans or bags not exceeding 35 gallons in capacity or 70 pounds in weight. If you have additional questions, please call the Village, 630-837-0800.

Yard Waste & Brush Pickup:

Yard rakings, grass clippings, garden material and small twigs are considered yard waste, which is collected April through November by Groot Industries. Residents can use generic yard waste bags with Groot stickers applied. Bartlett Village Hall, Ace Hardware and Jewel carry the yard waste stickers ($2.00 starting January 1, 2023).

During  October and November residents can put leaves into generic bags and they do not need a sticker for them to be collected.

Groot's brush collection has replaced the Bartlett Public Works brush collection program. Groot will collect brush weekly, April through November. Brush must be bundled with degradable twine in 2 feet by 2 feet by 4 foot long bundles.

In June 2021, the Village of Bartlett began contracting with Trees "R" Us to provide semi-annual brush pickup in the spring and fall that does NOT require bundling. This is a supplemental program. Groot will still continue to pick up weekly bundled brush as stated above. See Brush Collection webpage for more details.

Christmas Trees:

Christmas trees will be removed on your regular pick up day for a three week period following Christmas at no additional charge. Trees taller than 8 feet need to be trimmed down to a size shorter than 8 feet. Trees that have decorations or that are put out for disposal after this time period will be picked up but not recycled.

Solid Waste Items Not Collected:

Illinois law prohibits the disposal of certain waste in landfills. The following items are banned from landfills: automobile tires, automobile batteries, explosives, toxic items, hazardous & volatile waste, flammable waste, gasoline, motor oil, anti-freeze, large automobile parts and wheels, acids & poisons, CFL bulbs, florescent bulbs, electronic waste, swimming pool chemicals and paint in liquid form.

Bulk Items & Oversized/Overweight Items:

Residents of Bartlett may set out bulk items to be collected on the same day as their regular collection day at no additional charge. You do not need to call for a separate collection of bulk items, however, Groot may need to circle back on collection day with an appropriate truck for your larger bulk/oversized items.

Groot will collect small amounts of construction material that is in proper containers, not to exceed 35 gallons, weighing less than 70 pounds (unless placed in optional 96 gallon container furnished by contractor) or bundled into 4 foot bundles not exceeding the 70 pounds, and secured on both sides. This debris from the small remodeling projects cannot exceed 2 cubic yards, the equivalent of 10 normal trash containers. This material will be picked up at no additional charge to the customer.

In the event large amounts of construction materials are placed at the curb, which exceed 2 cubic yards, the customer shall be responsible to arrange a special pick up for the removal and disposal of those materials for an additional charge.

~ Groot will consider a box spring and mattress as one large item.
~ Carpeting should be in rolls no longer than 4 feet long and 2 feet in diameter and taped. Groot considers 5 rolls to be one large item.
~ In general try and keep any loose material bundled and neat for pickup.
~ Stone, concrete and dirt can only be picked up in containers and cannot weigh more than 45 lbs. per container. Two containers will be considered one large item.

Oversized and overweight items are any single large or extra heavy item that requires Groot to schedule a special pickup. An example of an oversized item is a piano or any item that requires two or more people to safely lift. There will be an additional cost for oversized items. Please call Groot to schedule a pickup.

Appliances:

State laws require Groot to collect any white good type of appliances such as refrigerators, ovens, washers etc. separately and recycle. There is no charge for this service.

Electronic Waste:

Beginning in 2012, the disposal of computers, televisions, and other electronic devices was banned from Illinois landfills. Under the state law, electronic waste (E-waste) had to be recycled by a registered collector, recycler and/or manufacturer and many curbside waste haulers stopped accepting electronic waste.

Groot accepts electronics for recycling in Bartlett as part of its waste hauler contract. Residents DO NOT need a sticker for e-cycling, it is included in your monthly waste fee. However, you DO NEED to notify Groot beforehand so the company can bring the appropriate vehicle for collection.  Please contact Groot at 847-429-7370 or BartlettCSR@groot.com with a voice mail or email message by 11 p.m. Sunday night if you want e-recycling picked up on Tuesday morning.

Electronics may also be dropped off at other Residential E-Waste Collection Locations. Visit the Illinois EPA Electronics Recycling webpage for more information and a link to an interactive map of E-Waste collection locations. The Electronic Products and Recycling Act allows each registered collector to decide which of the covered electronic devices they choose to accept, so please call and inquire which devices they will or will not accept.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, electronics are complex devices, made with a wide variety of materials, such as lead, nickel, cadmium and mercury. These components could pose a risk to human health or the environment if mismanaged at their end of life.

Additionally, the U.S. EPA has found that recycling electronics recovers valuable materials, resulting in reduced greenhouse gas emissions, pollution reduction, energy savings, and resources conserved by extracting fewer raw materials from the Earth.

Household Hazardous Waste

The Village does not collect household hazardous waste such as paint, oil, or batteries. However, DuPage County provides a comprehensive listing of recycling events and green initiatives for the immediate area. There is also a permanent household hazardous waste drop-off facility located in Naperville that can be used by all residents of Illinois, visit their site for more information.
