Increased efficiency, improved water use accountability and the ability to provide more timely, accurate information to consumers are just a few of the advantages that will be realized from the water meter replacement program currently underway in the Village of Bartlett.

The village has contracted with Water Resources, Inc. and its affiliated company, Water Services Co. to replace outdated water meters with new automated meters and transmitters. The new meters will be read automatically via a radio transmitter mounted on the outside of your home.

The new water meter and transmitter will be installed at no cost to the property owner and appointments typically take less than one hour to complete. You will receive an installation letter in the mail (see sample letter below) with instructions for scheduling and preparing for your installation appointment.

Evening and weekend appointment hours are available. Water meter installations will be performed by a uniformed licensed plumber who will carry a Water Services Co. picture ID badge, travel in marked vehicles, and will present their ID badge upon arrival for the appointment. A person eighteen (18) years or older must be present during the installation.

What are the benefits from replacing water meters?

The EPA is beginning to require municipalities to reduce water waste – known as unallocated water – which leaks from places such as broken water mains. This is fully potable drinking water that never makes it to the tap and ends up back in the ground. It's a costly loss. The EPA target is no more than 8% of the water supply gets wasted. So this project provides two benefits to the village: it provides more accurate billing for water usage, and it helps the village detect and repair unallocated water loss.

Can I just keep using my existing water meter?
The replacement program is mandatory. Every home and business will receive a new device.

How much time will the installation require?
Depends on the circumstances. Appointments typically take less than one hour to complete. Your water service will need to be shut off using the shut-off valve at the meter to complete the installation. If the internal shut off valve is not functional, the property owner will be responsible for the repair, which will require more time. Any work performed will be between the property owner and Water Services Co. or the property owner’s desired licensed plumber.

What do I need to do to prepare for the appointment?

Know where your water meter is located.
Make sure the area around your water meter is clear to allow room for the installers to work with at least a four foot (4’) radius
Your water meter must be accessible, if the meter is buried behind a finished wall; it is the responsibility of the property owner to provide access.
